German and Italian warships intercept tankers from UAE bound for Libya—German and Italian warships intercept a tanker carrying jet fuel in alleged violation of an international arms embargo on Libya.

The tanker had arrived from the United Arab Emirates and was heading for the port of Benghazi in eastern Libya when it was intercepted BBC Thursday (10/9/2020).

Benghazi is the defensive base for forces led by General Khalifa Haftar, supported by the United Arab Emirates, which are fighting Libyan government forces based in the capital Tripoli which have United Nations support.

The Italian and German warships are part of European Union forces trying to stop weapons from reaching the two opposing camps.
